On 24th September 2020, an international online conference on “Religion in Changing World. Role of Education in Upbringing of Youth” took place on the platform of the TASS press centre in Moscow, bringing together eighty participants from twenty countries. Among those who took part in the forum were religious leaders, statesmen, journalists and experts.

With the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, Rev. Dimitry Safonov, DECR secretary for interreligious relations, participated in the forum. As the DECR representative noted in his address, within the framework of the Interreligious Council of Russia the Russian religious communities took an active part in the implementation of the programme of teaching the fundamentals of religious cultures and secular ethics in schools.

Rev. Dimitry Safonov emphasized the importance of teaching the basics of religious and moral culture of the peoples of Russia in preventing radicalism and extremism, since it is religious ignorance that becomes breeding ground for radical preachers. To conclude his address, the DECR representative pointed out that today religion plays a significant role in maintaining peace, stability and prosperity of peoples and countries.
