On 23 January 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently in Israel, met with the mother of Naama Issachar sentenced on drug possession and smuggling charges. Taking part in the meeting were His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos II of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine; Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations.

After the meeting President Putin told the journalists: It has become clear to that Naama’s family is good and decent and I am aware of the prime minister’s position. This will be taken into account when the solution will be taken.

At his meeting with President Putin on 20 November 2019 attended by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos appealed for pardon for the sentenced citizen of Israel.
