On 20 February 2018, at the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, DECR chairman, met with H.E. Mr. Nadir Yousif Eltayeb Babiker, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sudan to the Russian Federation. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Sami Aburajaa Alageb, Second Secretary of the Embassy.

Taking part in the meeting were also Rev. Dimitry Safonov, DECR secretary for interreligious relations, and Deacon Andrei Titushkin of the DECR Secretariat for Far Abroad Countries.

Metropolitan Hilarion greeted the head of the Sudanese diplomatic mission and told him about various activities of the Department for External Church Relations, noting that the Russian Orthodox Church devotes close attention to the problem of oppression and persecution of Christians all over the world. Among the issues raised during the meeting was the situation of the Christian population in the Republic of Sudan. Now, after the separation of South Sudan in 2011, Christians are a minority in the country.

The head of the Sudanese diplomatic mission emphasized the necessity of upholding interreligious peace and mutual understanding between representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities in his country.
