Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, has sent a condolence letter to Bishop Irinej of Backa over the demise of Bishop Jeronim of Jegar, a vicar of the Backa diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The letter reads as follows:

Your Grace, dear Vladyka!

It was with deep sorrow that I have learnt of the untimely death of His Grace Bishop Jeronim of Jegar, a vicar of the Backa diocese, a spiritual son, fellow servant and assistant of Your Grace.

I recall my meeting with him, the last of which took place in Italy, where you and I participated in the session of the Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

I express profound condolences over this hard loss and offer up prayers to the All-Merciful Lord for the rest of the newly departed archpastor in the mansions of the righteous where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but love everlasting.

Eternal good memory to him!

With love in the Lord,

+Hilarion
