On 13 February 2016, the third day of his visit to Cuba, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met in Havana with Mr. Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, former President of Cuba’s Council of State and Council of Ministers, who will celebrate his 90th birthday this year.

The meeting took place in Fidel Castro’s house. The participants in the meeting discussed, among other issues, the international relations. Fidel Castro noted the significance of the historic meeting between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis.

The Primate of the Russian Church expressed his gratitude to Fidel Castro for an opportunity provided to an Orthodox community to have its own church in the capital of Cuba. The Orthodox Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Havana was constructed with the assistance of the Cuban authorities and the former leader of the country, in particular.
