On August 28, 2014, the Day of the Dormition of Our Lady, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Catholic church of St. Sebastian offered for Orthodox service in Bonn. He was assisted by Archbishop Feofan of Berlin and Germany, Bishop Eumenios of Lefki (Patriarchate of Constantinople) and the clergy of the Russian Orthodox diocese of Berlin and Germany.

The service was attended by Catholic prelates and clergy, representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and public figures in Germany, Russian Consul Ye. Shmagin, as well as relatives and friends of the deceased Archbishop Longin.

Addressing the congregation after the Liturgy, Metropolitan Hilarion spoke about the death of Our Lady as dormition, with Her soul going to meet the Lord Jesus Christ in eternal life. In the same way, he said, the decease of every Christian is not death but dormition, especially for those who, like Archbishop Longin, dedicated their whole life to the service of the Lord.

“Celebrating the requiem service for our dear brother Archbishop Longin, we will thank God for the feat of his life, for his long-standing pastoral service, for his faithfulness to Christ the Saviour and his love of people”, he said.

After the requiem service, Metropolitan Hilarion read out a message of condolence from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Bishop Eumenios read out a message of condolence from Metropolitan Augustine of Germany, Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Archbishop Longin of Klin was buried at the city cemetery in Bonn.
