On January 16, 2014, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, met with the Catholic primate of Mexico, Archbishop Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico, at the archbishop’s private residence.

Metropolitan Hilarion told Cardinal Carrera about the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church after decades of persecution and its ministry today. During the talk, which was held in a friendly atmosphere, Metropolitan Hilarion and Cardinal Carrera discussed various issues concerning the Orthodox-Catholic relations as well as the situation of Christians in the Middle East countries. The DECR chairman spoke about the efforts taken by the Moscow Patriarchate to help defend the Christian population in the Middle East who continue to encounter discrimination and violence.

Participating in the meeting were also Archbishop Anthony, Metropolitan of Mexico, Central America, Venezuela and the Caribbean Islands, Archbishop Justinian of Naro-Fominsk, administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, Hieromonk Ioann (Kopeikin), assistant to the DECR chairman, and Mr. M. Palacio of the DECR secretariat for the far-abroad countries.
