Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, sent the following congratulatory message to the new President of the Republic of Moldova:

Your Excellency, Highly Esteemed Mr Timofti:

I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate you on your election to the high office of President of the Republic of Moldova. I am convinced that your knowledge of life and professional experience will be called-for in your work in the new career for strengthening stability in Moldova. I hope that your election will help achieve accord in society in fruitful cooperation of all its sound forces.

The Orthodox Church occupies an important place in the history and today’s life of Moldova as guardian of spiritual, national and cultural traditions of the people, asserting the lofty ideals of love for the homeland and neighbours. I hope that in your work as president you will maintain close cooperation with the Orthodox Church of Moldova for the benefit of all the citizens of the country.
