On July 28, 2009, in conclusion of his pastoral visitation of Ukraine, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia visited the Memorial of Glory in Kiev and the memorial to the victims of the 1930s mass starvation.

Having laid wreaths of natural flowers at the memorials, His Holiness said a prayer for the dead commanders and soldiers who gave their lives for the faith and the Motherland and for the victims of the mass starvation which spread to several regions in Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan in the last century 30s.

His Holiness remarked that he visited these places outside the program of his visit. ‘I followed the dictates of my heart’, he said, stressing that just as he did during his visit to Ukraine last year, he lifted up prayer for those who died in the Great Patriotic War and the mass starvation and honoured their memory without any political assessments.
