On September 26, 2018, an award ceremony took place at the Rector’s Office of the State University of Belgrade to present Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate head of the department for external church relations, with honorary doctorate.

The event was attended by His Holiness Irenaeus, Patriarch of Serbia, and members of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church including Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb and Ljubljana, Bishop Irinej of Bac, Bishop Jovan of Sumaidja and Bishop Milutin of Valjevo. Present at the ceremony were also Bishop Vasilije of Srem, Bishop Pahomije of Vransko; Bishop Antonije of Moravici, rector of the Moscow representation of the Serbian Orthodox Church; Bishop Isihije of Mohacs, vicar of the diocese of Bac; Bishop Stefan of Remesiana, vicar of the Archdiocese of Belgrade; Archpriest Sava Jovic, secretary of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church; Archpriest Predrag Puzovic, dean of the State University of Belgrade department of theology; Ms. N. Kuschenkova, director of the Russian House in Belgrade, and professors of the University of Belgrade.

The award ceremony was opened by Archpriest Predrag Puzovic, who spoke on the ecclesial and academic work of Metropolitan Hilarion. Then the rector of the university, Prof. B. Bumbasirevic, read out the resolution on awarding the hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church the degree of honorary doctor of the State University of Belgrade.

Then Metropolitan Hilarion made a speech on problems of the New Testament scholarship today and presented his six-volume work ‘Jesus Christ. Life and Teaching’.
