On 5 September 2018, a delegation of the clergy and laity of the Church of England led by Bishop Jonathan Goodall of Ebbsfleet visited the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations. The group arrived in Russia to attend a course of the Summer Institute organized by Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies.

With the blessing of the DECR chairman, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations, met with the guests and told them about the history of the oldest Synodal department of the Moscow Patriarchate, as well as about its major activities and the current relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Anglican Communion. Speaking on the history of the inter-Christian cooperation, Hieromonk Stefan emphasized an important role of Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) of Leningrad and Novgorod in its development. These days mark the 40th anniversary of his death.

Among those attending the meeting were also Ms. Karina Gandour, secretary to Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies, and Mr. Philip Champion of the DECR Secretariat for Inter-Christian relations.

The Summer Institute for the clergy and laity of the Church of England is organized by Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies within the framework of the Coordinating Committee for Cooperation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England. As part of a 10-day programme, the attendees of the Summer Institute visit the Synodal institutions and theological schools of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as the holy places and cultural and historical sights in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod.
