January 17, 2017 – Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR) met with Bishop Jonathan Goodall of Ebbsfleet, Church of England, at the Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-Graduate Studies. Participating in the meeting were also Rev. Andrew Petrin, Church of England, who accompanied Bishop Goodall, and Ph. Champion, a DECR staff member.

The sides discussed a wide range of issues of mutual concern, especially the relations between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Church of England. They pointed to the great significance of the joint statement signed by His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, and Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury in November 2017 in support for the persecuted Christians. They also considered possible joint actions for aid to Christians in the Middle East.

Under consideration was also the work of the Coordinating Committee for Cooperation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England chaired by Metropolitan Hilarion and Bishop Goodall. They dealt in particular with the Summer Institute to be held for students in 2018.
