In his letter to Mr. Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, expressed condolences over the death of Mr. Andrei Karlov, Russian Ambassador to Turkey. The text of the message is given below.

Dear Sergey Viktorovich,

Please accept my profound condolences over the assassination of Mr. Andrei Gennadyevich Karlov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Turkey.

At this hour of sorrow for the Russian foreign services, I ask you to convey my words of support and consolation to the spouse and colleagues of the departed.

I am grieving over the loss of this experienced and gifted man with all those who knew Andrei Gennadyevich, who worked together with him in the diplomatic sphere. I prayerfully wish to you and to his relatives and friends spiritual fortitude and strength.

May the Lord give rest to the soul of His newly departed servant Andrei in the Heavenly dwellings.
