On 18 October 2016, a regular session of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church took place at the Kiev Laura of the Caves under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine.

The Synod made a decision to set up an organizing committee for preparing the celebrations that will mark the 25th anniversary of the Kharkov Council held in 1992, and to institute  a scholarship of the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for the best students of higher theological education institutions of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Metropolitan Nifont of Volyn and Lutsk was relieved from his post as head of the Volyn diocese for medical reasons and was appointed rector of the Lutsk Cathedral. The members of the Synod expressed their appreciation to Metropolitan Nifont for his years-long service in the diocese of Volyn.

Bishop Nafanail of Kamen-Kashirsky was appointed Bishop of Volyn and Lutsk.

Archimandrite Isaaky (Andronikov) was elected Bishop of Vorzel, a vicar of the Kiev metropolia.

Archimandite Tikhon (Sofiychuk) was appointed Bishop of Gostomel, a vicar of the Kiev metropolia.

Archimandrite Veniamin (Mizhinsky) was appointed Bishop of Khotin, a vicar of the Chernovtsy diocese.

The Synod made a number of other decisions concerning the dioceses and monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
