On 5 December 2015, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, while on a working visit to Bulgaria with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, visited St Nicholas Church of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Metochion in Sofia, where he said a litia at the tomb of Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev).

Later that day the DECR chairman, accompanied by Metropolitan Joan of Varna and Veliki Preslav (Bulgarian Orthodox Church), Archimandrite Philip (Vasiltsev), rector of the Russian Orthodox Metochion in Sofia, archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations, and Mr. Alexander Yershov, assistant to the DECR chairman, paid a visit to the head of the Bulgarian Royal Family, Simeon II Sakskoburggotski. Tsar Simeon warmly greeted the guests at his residence in Sofia and showed them around the palace. As a token of the meeting, Metropolitan Hilarion presented the head of the Bulgarian Royal Family with a disk containing his documentary film about the Russian Orthodox Church.

That same day the DECR chairman returned to Moscow.
