Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, sent a message to Rev. Dr. Olaf Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, expressing his condolences over the death of pastor Dr. Philip Potter who hold the post of the WCC general secretary in 1972-1984. The text of the message is given below.

Dear Brother in Christ,

On behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and on my behalf, I express our sincere condolences over the demise of pastor Dr. Philip Potter.

The whole Christendom remembers pastor Philip A. Potter as a prominent figure of inter-Christian dialogue and tireless champion of social justice and peace in the whole world. His many years’ selfless work as general secretary of the World Council of Churches fostered cooperation among Christians of different confessions. Many generations of the faithful all over the world will cherish the memory of pastor Philip Potter.
