Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission, presented a report on the progress in compiling the Catechism of the Russian Orthodox Church.

He reminded the participants in the Bishops’ Conference that the Bishops’ Council put up an idea of the Catechism in 2008. The Holy Synod instructed the Synodal Theological Commission and other Synodal structures to compile modern Catechism of the Russian Orthodox Church (minutes 62; 27 July 2009). That same year in December the Holy Synod approved the composition of the working group headed by Archbishop (now Metropolitan) Hilarion.

The Bishops’ Council of 2013 set a task to the Theological Commission ‘to complete the work before the next Bishops’ Council’.

The Synodal Biblical and Theological Commission will have to present the final draft Catechism to the Holy Synod for consideration at the end of 2015.

As the Catechism will be an important doctrinal document of the Russian Orthodox Church, it is being prepared very thoroughly.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill thanked Metropolitan Hilarion for the work, noting that it is progressing on schedule.
