November 27, 2014 – A delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, arrived in Sofia for the centenary of the Grand Consecration of the St. Nicholas of Myra in Lycia Church Representation. The delegation is led by Metropolitan Kirill of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye.

The delegation was met at the airport by Metropolitan John of Varna and Veliko Preslav, rector of the Patriarchal Church Representation in Sofia, Archimandrite Philip (Vasiltsev) and Mr. Ye. Prikhodko, second secretary of the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria.

Metropolitan Kirill visited the ROC Church Representation and celebrated the lity at the grave of Archbishop Seraphim of Bogucharsk in its crypt.

The Russian church of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia and Wonder-worker, was founded in 1907 by Prince Vladimir Alexandrovich, a son of Emperor Alexander II.

Built for the Embassy of the Russian Empire in Sofia, this church was designed in the style of the 17th century Moscow church architecture. The construction was completed in 1911.

On November 24, 1914, Metropolitan Basil of Dorostol and Cherven celebrated the Grand Consecration of the church in the presence of Russian and foreign diplomats and numerous faithful.

The committee for preparing the centenary celebrations was co-chaired from the Bulgarian side by the Head of the Bulgarian Royal Dynasty, King Simeon.
