image_big_58317On 22 November 2013, before the session of the Supreme Church Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and members of the Council offered up prayers for the rest of the souls of the victims of the Maxima store collapse in Riga, the capital of Latvia.

“Before we begin our work, I would like to remind you that on November 21 a tragedy occurred in Riga – the roof and walls of the supermarket collapsed, and innocent people were killed or injured,” His Holiness said.

Death toll has increased to over 50; dozens of the injured have been hospitalized. It is not yet known how many people are still under the rubble. The rescue work continues.  Latvia began three days of mourning.

At the suggestion of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, members of the Supreme Church Council sang ‘Memory Eternal’ to the victims, press office of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia reports.
