DECR chairman meets with Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, UN special envoy to Syria

On 17 November 2013, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, who visits Liechtenstein with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, met with Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, United Nations and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria.

Metropolitan Hilarion gave him a detailed account of the work done by the Russian Orthodox Church for the betterment of the situation in Syria and the alleviation of sufferings of the Syrian people.

The DECR chairman underscored that the Russian Orthodox Church cooperates with the Russian authorities in seeking peaceful solution of the Syrian problem. He hopes that the upcoming Geneva II conference will offer new prospects for political settlement in Syria.

The high representative of the United Nations noted a special part played by Russia in the settlement of Syrian crisis. He expressed solidarity with the position of the Moscow Patriarchate in its efforts undertaken in contacts with religious leaders of the world to stop bloodshed in Syria.
