Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, sent a message to Archbishop Julian Barrio Barrio of Santiago de Compostela, expressing his condolences over the great tragedy which claimed lives of dozens of people. The text of the message is given below:

Your Excellency,

I was deeply grieved to learn about the train accident near Santiago de Compostela, as a result of which dozens of people were killed and over a hundred people were injured. Many of them were pilgrims who were going to Santiago de Compostela to celebrate the commemoration day of St. James.

Please, accept my cordial condolences over the sorrow that has befallen your Archdiocese.

I am praying to the All-Merciful God asking Him to give rest to the souls of the victims, consolation to their relatives, and the soonest recovery to the injured.

With love in the Lord,

+Hilarion
