350The Moscow Patriarchate Publishers has issued the book entitled ‘Church in History: The Orthodox Church from Jesus Christ to Our Days’ by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations.

The book contains a brief description of the journey made in history by the twenty centuries-old Orthodox Church. An address to the historical experience of Orthodoxy can never be superfluous since we themselves are engulfed in history as its part.

‘Today’s life of the Orthodox Church is based on her historical experience. Orthodoxy is essentially historical as it is rooted in history. It is impossible to understand the identity of the Orthodox Church, her dogmatic teaching and canonical order, her liturgical structure and social doctrine outside the historical context. For us therefore, the address to history and to sources is not only of informative, but also educational and spiritual importance’, the author writes.

The book is laid in the basis of the 10-series documentary by Metropolitan Hilarion entitled ‘The Church in History’ shown on the Kultura TV channel in 2012. In this documentary, the author introduced viewers to all the landmarks in the history of the Church and takes them through the places of main events in Jerusalem and Athens, Rome and Constantinople, Vladimir and Kiev, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The presentation of the book will take place at the Moscow International Book Fair to be held from September 4 to 9, 2013.

The book is published with the support of the St. Gregory the Theologian Charity.
