On 13 June 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, arrived in Athens with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

On June 14, the DECR chairman met with His Beatitude Hieronymos, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece. They discussed prospects of bilateral relations between the two Churches, including exchange of students and expanding of cooperation in pilgrimage and culture.

The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Greece gave a luncheon in honour of the high guest.

That same day, Metropolitan Hilarion met with Metropolitan Ignatios of Dimitrios and Almyros, a member of the Commission for Inter-Orthodox Relations of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, and later with Mr. Dimitrios Dolis, deputy foreign minister of Greece.

In the evening, the DECR chairman and his suite departed for Crete to take part in the meeting of the working group of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
