Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, has begun his visit today to Ukraine.

The metropolitan is accompanied by Rev. Igor Yakimchuk, DECR secretary for inter-Orthodox relations, and Mr. L. Sevastyanov, director of the St. Gregory the Theologian Charity.

Metropolitan Hilarion has arrived at the airport of the city of Donetsk. He was welcomed by Bishop Varnava, vicar of the diocese of Donetsk.

The visit will last till November 17. The DECR chairman will visit the cities of Donetsk, Severodonetsk, Lugansk, Kharkov, Poltava, Cherkassy, Kiev and Chernigov. He will venerate shrines in Orthodox churches and monasteries and will meet with representatives of the government, science and culture, the clergy and the public. In some cities, musical compositions by Metropolitan Hilarion will be performed.

The trip is made with the support of the St. Gregory the Theologian Charity.
