Heads of Orthodox Churches of Alexandria and Russia express condolences over death of Poland’s president and other members of Polish delegation in air crash
The Primates of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria and the Russian Orthodox Church expressed condolences over the death of Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, high-ranking state officials and many Polish citizens in an air crash. Below is the text of the Patriarchal message.
Mr. Bronislaw Komorowski
Acting President
Republic of Poland
Your Excellency,
During our fraternal meetings in the ancient land of Alexandria, we have heard with pain in our hearts the report about the death of Poland’s President Lech Kaczinski, his wife Maria, high-ranking state officials and many Polish citizens in an air crash.
On behalf of all the faithful of the Orthodox Churches of Alexandria and Russia, we extend profound condolences to all the Polish people over this terrible tragedy. We sincerely share your grief for the dead. May the all-merciful God give repose to their souls in the heavenly dwellings and give their relatives and friends the strength to endure the bereavement.
The plane crashed not far from Katyn – the place of common historical pain for both the Russian and Polish people. Since this day, the commemoration of the thousands of those who were killed in the Katyn forest will be bound up with the blessed memory of all the passengers of the crashed airliners.
In this sorrowful time, we lift up prayers to the Lord that He may give you courage, endurance and strength from above.
With profound condolences,
+ Theodore
Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa
+ Kirill
Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia
