Days of Russian Culture in Iceland opened with singing praise to the Most Holy Mother of God
The Days of Russian Culture in Iceland were opened on October 14, 2009, the Day of the Intercession, with the singing of the Akathistos to the Most Holy Mother of God at St. Nicholas’s Chapel in Reykjavik.
Singing during the divine service in Church Slavonic, Serbian and Icelandic was the Manassia Orthodox missionary choir conducted by Nejbos Colic.
After the service, a lecture-talk was held on the Orthodox Icon as Part of Russian Culture. It was attended by the Russian embassy staff, Russian-speaking people residing in Iceland and Icelandic natives from among the parishioners.
The Days of Russian Culture have been organized jointly by the Russian-Speaking Society in Iceland, the Russian Embassy and St. Nicholas’s Parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Reykjavik.
It has become a good tradition to begin the Days of Russian Culture on the Intercession Day. The Days’ events will be held from October 14 to November 7. Along with the Akathistos, the program includes an exhibition of Russian craft artists, a divine service on November 4, the Day of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan and the Day of People’s Unity, a children’s drawing contest, recitals, an art master class, a Russian cuisine party and other events.
On October 17, the Russian Embassy in Reykjavik gave a reception devoted to the Days of Russian Culture. The guests could see an exhibition of creative works produced by Russian-speaking residents in Iceland. Among the participants in the opening ceremony led by Minister Counselor V. Biryukov was Father Timofey Zolotusky, rector of St. Nicholas’s Parish.
