On November 4, the National Unity Day, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin had a traditional talk with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and leaders of the religious associations in Russia. This year the meeting was held in videoconference mode.<\/p>\n

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church took part in the talk from the Patriarchal Chamber of the Many-Faceted Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin.<\/p>\n

The visual communication also connected the Presidential study in the Kremlin with the Central Muslim Board in Russia located in Ufa, Moscow Cathedral Mosque, North Caucasus Coordination Center in Cherkessk, Ivolginsky Datsan, Lutheran Cathedral of Ss Peter and Paul in Moscow and other establishments.<\/p>\n

Greeting the assembly Mr. Putin noted in particular, \u2018The\u00a0traditions of\u00a0kind, respectful relationship between people of\u00a0different ethnicities and\u00a0religious beliefs have been left to\u00a0us by\u00a0our ancestors. But it is not enough to be simply proud of this living spiritual heritage and the experience of creating a\u00a0unique civilization. Of\u00a0course, we have the\u00a0right to\u00a0be proud and\u00a0we should be. But this is not enough. These values need to\u00a0be protected, strengthened and\u00a0nurtured. This is our common duty to\u00a0this generation and\u00a0future generations as well\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Interethnic and\u00a0interreligious peace is the\u00a0keystone for\u00a0our huge country. It needs constant attention from the\u00a0authorities, from civil society and\u00a0from the\u00a0media. The\u00a0work here should\u00a0be delicate, meticulous and\u00a0comprehensive. And we are trying to\u00a0act so\u00a0\u2013 in\u00a0the\u00a0most delicate and\u00a0constructive manner\u2019, the President stated.<\/p>\n

After that, the participants in the meeting were addressed by His Holiness Kirill. \u2018The true power of our people is in unity\u2019, the Primate of the Russian Church underscored. \u2018It seems to me that representatives of religious communities are playing an important role in forming this unity today because religions\u00a0 themselves can draw lines of both opposition and even confrontation, and this did happened in history. But by God\u2019s mercy, our people, having gone through internal civil confrontations, are clearly aware today of the need for unity\u2019.<\/p>\n

According to His Holiness, it is remarkable that leaders of religious organizations in Russia can get together and meet with the head of the state in order to talk with each other and to underscore by the very fact of such meetings their \u2018commitment to the unity of our people and, certainly, to re-affirm their readiness for interreligious interaction and cooperation\u2019.<\/p>\n
