New Challenges and New Frontiers\u201d was held at the World Trade Center in Moscow.<\/p>\n
The Congress was opened by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said inter alia: \u201cCurrently, there are associations of Russian compatriots functioning in more than 100 countries. Their contribution to the creation of conditions for learning the Russian language and making Russian cultural achievements more popular can hardly be overestimated. Not only the Russian Orthodox Church but also other traditional religions open places of worship. We are happy that the process of consolidation and self-organization continues. We are ready to assist it in any way possible and boost our efforts in this sphere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Konstantin Kosachev, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, read out greetings from the Council\u2019s chairperson Valentina Matvienko.<\/p>\n
Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate\u2019s Department for External Church Relations, was the next speaker. He cordially greeted the participants on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and said\u201dAll of us, who live in the Fatherlands and beyond its borders, have one history with its glorious and victorious and complicated and tragic pages.<\/p>\n
The DECR chairman reminded the audience that 2018 marks the centenary of the wanton killing of the Imperial family and that this sorrowful date urges us to look more closely at the events that happened a century ago and have been linked with the Russian diaspora, the unique phenomenon in foreign countries, which at present is a complicated community of people of different political persuasions and views on the social processes in Russia. \u201cYet our compatriots are united by faith, value system, language, culture and history. The Russian Orthodox Church has not divided her children on the political, economic or any other criteria, but unites people around eternal Gospel ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Metropolitan Hilarion drew attention of those present to the new historical challenge launched against the unity of the Russian Orthodox Church by the Patriarchate of Constantinople which unilaterally named Ukraine its canonical territory, recognized and took into communion \u2018hierarchs\u2019 of the Ukrainian schismatic communities and declared its intention to create a new \u2018local Church\u2019 with autocephalous status. He underscored that not only the principle of fraternal love was flouted, but also trust without which even secular diplomatic relations are impossible.<\/p>\n
The DECR chairman noted that under the circumstances and in compliance with the fundamental norms of canon law he Russian Orthodox Church had to break the prayerful and Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople. \u201cWe expect that our compatriots living abroad will understand the current complicated situation and support communities and parishes of our Church abroad as this support may turn out to be necessary in certain cases.\u201dOur nation has managed to overcome tragedies of the last century by the prayers of the new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church, and I am confident that our faith will help us today and the living connection with the past will allow us to look into the future with hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the plenary discussion on Russian diaspora, saying in particular: \u201cOver 700 people from many countries are attending this Congress. At\u00a0the\u00a0same time, all of\u00a0you together represent the\u00a0tight-knit community of\u00a0Russian compatriots and\u00a0the\u00a0huge united Russian world, which was never based exclusively on\u00a0ethnic, national or\u00a0religious principles. It has brought together and\u00a0united all those who are connected to\u00a0Russia spiritually, who feel a\u00a0spiritual link to\u00a0our homeland, and\u00a0who consider themselves to\u00a0be Russian speakers and\u00a0the\u00a0carriers of\u00a0Russian culture and\u00a0history.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u00a0would like to\u00a0express my\u00a0sincere gratitude to\u00a0you for\u00a0your involvement in\u00a0the\u00a0life of\u00a0Russia, for\u00a0your invariable support and\u00a0for\u00a0your solidarity. We are grateful for\u00a0your contribution to\u00a0the\u00a0promotion and\u00a0advancement of\u00a0our rich historical and\u00a0cultural heritage and\u00a0everything else that constitutes our national Russian identity.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u00a0must also say a\u00a0few more words about the\u00a0efforts of\u00a0the\u00a0Russian Orthodox Church and\u00a0other traditional national confessions, including Islam, Judaism and\u00a0Buddhism. I\u00a0can see many representatives of\u00a0these religions in\u00a0this hall, and\u00a0I\u00a0would like to\u00a0welcome them. I\u00a0want to\u00a0thank them for\u00a0their efforts to\u00a0strengthen cultural and\u00a0humanitarian ties between our compatriots abroad and\u00a0Russia. Unfortunately, some are now trying to\u00a0sever these ties, one way or\u00a0another, and\u00a0to\u00a0force these people to\u00a0stay in\u00a0their respective countries. I\u00a0would like to\u00a0note one thing: political intrigues in\u00a0this sensitive sphere have always spelled dire consequences, primarily for\u00a0those who are doing this. It is our shared duty \u2013 to\u00a0the\u00a0people, in\u00a0the\u00a0first place \u2013 to\u00a0do everything possible to\u00a0preserve spiritual and\u00a0historical unity.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
