Passions According to St. Matthews by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk resound in Church of Christ the Saviour
Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk’ oratorio Passions According to St. Matthews resounded on 25 March 2010 in the Church Councils Hall of the Church of Christ the Saviour. The composition is based on the story about the last days of the Lord Jesus Christ on earth in the Gospel of St. Mathews.
This monumental music was first performed on 27 March 2007 at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire. Later the composition was presented in Italy, Australia, Canada, Ukraine, Moldova and in various regions of Russia. The oratorio invariably captivated the attention of audiences.
In the Church Councils Hall, the oratorio was performed by the world-famous Russian National Orchestra founded in 1990 by celebrated Mikhail Pletnev and the Moscow Synodal Choir conducted by Honoured Artist Alexy Puzakov. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and Al Russia, the Synodal Choir has been reconstituted recently out of the choir of the church of Our Lady the Joy to All the Afflicted in Moscow. This team, while reviving the repertoire and mastery of the Synodal Choir in its prime in the late 19th-early 20th centuries, devotes much attention to works by modern composers.
