ARCHBISHOP ALEXANDER PRESENTED WITH THE 21ST CENTURY’S HEALTHY GENERATION PRIZE
On May 27, 2002, a ceremony of the presentation of the first national 21st Century’s Healthy Generation Prize took place in Moscow. The prize is awarded for contribution to youth’s education, teaching and overcoming of drug-addiction, alcoholism and other vices to which the younger generation is liable.
His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, sent a message to the participants in the ceremony. It states in particular, “For keeping new generations healthy, medicines and trainers alone are not enough. Health begins in hearts and minds. I am happy that we begin to understand it more and more. The Church, government and society are uniting their efforts in overcoming drug-addiction, alcoholism, homelessness and crime. Many of those who are present here have worked well in this field. However, it is not enough today. We should help young people to recover the meaning of life, its moral basis. I know: the youth want to find themselves. I am calling upon educators, journalists, artists, politicians and public figures to help them. I am confident that new generations of Russian citizens will be worthy of the glory of their great forefathers and will lead the Motherland to welfare and spiritual revival with the help of God and our common efforts.”
Archbishop Alexander of Kostroma and Galich, chairman of the Youth Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, was among the 2002 prize-winners. Vice-chairman of the Department Archimandrite Gennady (Gogolev) received the prize on his behalf. Mr. Reshetnikov, chairman of the Brotherhood of Orthodox Scouts was given a diploma of the prize. Among the participants in the ceremony was Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, vice-chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
