CATHEDRAL OF ST. MICHAEL, THE LARGEST CHURCH IN UKRAINE, CONSECRATED IN CHERKASSY
Metropolitan Agafangel of Odessa and Izmail consecrated the recently built Cathedral of the Angel Michael with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev and All Ukraine.
He celebrated the ceremony together with Metropolitan Onufry of Chernovtsy and Bukovina, Metropolitan Iriney of Dnepropetrovsk and Pavlograd, Metropolitan Nifont of Lutsk and Volyn, Archbishop Platon of Argentina and South America, Archbishop Augustin of Lvov and Galich, Bishop Gury of Zhitomir and Novograd-Volynsky, Bishop Efrem of Krivorog and Nikopol, Bishop Iov of Sumy and Ahtyr, Bishop Amvrosy of Novgorod-Seversky, Bishop Philip of Poltava and Kremenchug and many clergymen from various dioceses.
More than fifteen thousand people gathered to attend the consecration of the Cathedral of St. Michael. The 72-meter-high grand church was erected during eight years thanks to the selfless work of Archbishop Sofrony of Cherkassy and Kanev, who celebrated the 10th anniversary of his episcopal consecration on August 9, on the same day as the cathedral was consecrated.
After the service a message of Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch of All Byelorussia, was read out. Archimandrite Mark (Golovkov), vice-chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, read out a message of Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
The event was concluded with a festive dinner.
