The Georgian Orthodox Church shares the Moscow Patriarchate’s concern about the Vatican’s activity

THE GEORGIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH SHARES THE MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE’S CONCERN ABOUT THE VATICAN’S ACTIVITY

His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, received a message of His Holiness and Beatitude Elijah II, Catholicos and Patriarch of All Georgia of August 20, 2002, defining the unilateral decision by the Vatican to establish a Catholic church province in Russia.

The Primate of the Georgian Patriarchate said in particular: “All of us are concerned about the active religious Vatican’s activity on the territory of Orthodox Churches. Unfortunately, the Vatican declares its wish to have good fraternal relations with the Orthodox Churches on the one hand, and establishes Catholic parishes, churches, schools and other charity institutions on the canonical territories of the Orthodox Churches on the other hand, what leads to confrontation among Orthodox and Catholic Christians.

We entirely agree with you that it conflicts with the traditions of the one and undivided Church and violates St. Paul’s commandment: “thus making in my ambition the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I built on another man’s foundation” (Rom. 15.20).”
