METROPOLITAN KIRILL MEETS HAMBO LAMA DCHOIJAMTS, HEAD OF THE MONGOLIAN BUDDHISTS
On 26 November 2001 Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations met with the head of the Mongolian Buddhists Dchoijamts, Hambo Lama of the Gandantegdchilen Monastery. Taking part in the meeting were H.E.Sanjiaa Bayar, Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Mongolia in Russia and members of the delegation accompanying the Head of Mongolian Buddhists. Discussed at the meeting was the role of the religious factor in international relations. Metropolitan Kirill spoke about his recent archpastoral visit to the countries of the South East Asia and about the cooperation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Buddhist traditional Sangha of Russia in the Interreligious Council of Russia. The Head of the Mongolian Buddhists noted the historical relations between Mongolia and the Russian Orthodox Church and expressed his appreciation over the opening of an Orthodox parish in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. The participants in the meeting noted the importance of continuing cooperation among the traditional religions in the face of the challenges of globalization on the one hand and the confrontation between civilizations and terrorism on the other.
On November 27, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia will receive Hambo Lama Dchijamts, the head of the Mongolian Buddhists.
