Requiem service for the Romanov grand princes shot to death at Sts Peter and Paul Fortress in 1919

A requiem service for the Romanov grand princes who were executed by shooting on January 24, 1919, at Sts Peter and Paul Fortress was held on January 30, at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. It was led by Rev. Alexander Fyodorov, rector of the cathedral, the St. Petersburg diocesan website has reported.

Grand Princes Nikolay Mikhailovich, Georgiy Mikhailovich and Dmitriy Konstantinovich were arrested in July 1918. In August they were transferred to Sts Peter and Paul Fortress to join Grand Prince Pavel Alexandrovich who had been brought to the fortress earlier from the Czar’s Village. They were sentenced to death by shooting by a decree of VChk, All Russia’s Emergency Committee, and the sentence was carried out on January 24, 1919, at Sts Peter and Paul Fortress.

In the late 90’s, the executed grand princes were rehabilitated and in September 2004 a memorial tablet with their names was placed at the Romanovs’ burial- vault in the fortress.

As the rector of the cathedral stressed, requiem services for the executed grand princes have been held for several years now.
