The representative of the World Russian People’s Council at the UN takes part in a meeting with the president of the 60th Session of the UN General Assembly

Jan Eliasson, president of the UN General Assembly, met on December 16, 2005, with representatives of non-governmental organizations accredited at the UN headquarters in New York.
Among the participants in the meeting was Rev. Alexander Abramov, the representative of the World Russian People’s Council at the UN.
The president of the UN GA jubilee session set forth his vision of the reform of the UN and its major institutions. He also spoke on the ways of achieving ‘the Millennium Development Goals’ and the areas of cooperation between UN member states and the civil society including non-governmental organizations. He gave special attention to the work of the current session of the major working body of the world forum, the General Assembly, carried out after the September 2005 Summit.
Especially alive was the discussion on the UN human rights advocacy. Participants considered the participation of NGOs in the work of the Commission for Human Rights and in the efforts of the international community to rebuild its work to be able to respond to violations in this area, wherever they may take place, in an unprejudiced and correct manner.
It was agreed to continue consultations between the UN GA leaders and NGOs on every agenda item in which the experience of respective public, religious and political structures may be useful for the implementation of the tasks set forth in the UN Constitution.
