Moscow Patriarchate delegation to attend the funeral of the Greek Orthodox Church leader

The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church met on January 28, 2008, to determine the time and place of Archbishop Christodoulos’s funeral and the day for electing a new primate of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The funeral service will take place at 10.00 on January 31. Archbishop Christodoulos will be buried at the First Cemetery in Athens after the funeral service.

The Russian Orthodox Church will be represented at the funeral by a delegation to be led by Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch for All Belarus.

The elections of a new leader of the Greek Orthodox Church will take place on February 7 at the Athens cathedral.

Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece died on January 28, 2008, at the age of 70, after a serious and prolonged illness. A three-day mourning has been announced in Greece. The parting with the deceased primate of the Greek Orthodox Church will last for three days at the Athens cathedral.
