The Sverdlovsk regional healthcare ministry and the diocese of Yekaterinburg have signed a cooperation agreement. The first program for their cooperation was worked out in 1994. For the last 13 years, over two dozens of chapels and prayer rooms have been opened in hospitals in Yekaterinburg, Pervouralsk and other cities of the province. There are Orthodox sisterhoods of mercy working in many hospitals and homes for the elderly in the region.
According to the diocesan news agency, the agreement provides for an active participation of parishes and departments of the diocese in giving medical and social aid to the disabled, elderly and other people who need nursing and social rehabilitation and those who suffer from all kinds of dependency. Volunteers from churches in the Urals will help ensure the necessary nursing to in- and out-patients.
The ministry of healthcare, on its part, has undertaken to help open new hospital churches, chapels and prayer rooms.
