On December 4, prayer services were held in Orthodox churches in Magadan, Kamchatka and Anadyr for the troops ‘who stand guard at the country’s frontiers’, the Regnum new agency reported with reference to the press service of the North-East Frontier Directorate.
On the Day of the Presentation of Our Lady to the Temple, frontier guards and directorate leaders gathered for a solemn service at the church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. After the service, the blessing ceremony was held for the St. Andrew’s Naval Flag of the directorate’s patrol ships.
Since 1996, the Russian frontier guards have celebrated their special feast each December the 4th. This day was first established in 1893 when Alexander II signed a decree founding a special corps of Russian frontier guards and establishing their feast day on the Day of the Presentation of Our Lady to the Temple. On this day, a prayer for the good health of ‘warriors who stand guard at the country’s frontiers’ is lifted up in all the Orthodox Churches.
