His Holiness Patriarch Alexy conducts requiem service for Boris Yeltsin

On June 1 2007, the 40th day after the death of the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia conducted a requiem service for him at the Novodevichy Cemetery.

Present at the service were Mrs. Naina Yeltsin, relatives and friends of the first president, a number of public and political leaders, Russian People’s Artist Galina Vishnevskaya, and other cultural figures.

‘Eternal Memory’ was sung to the late president. His Holiness the Patriarch addressed himself to Naina Yeltsin with words of consolation.

Boris Yeltsin died on April 23, 2007. His funeral service took part on April 25 at the Church of Christ the Savior. It was conducted by Metropolitan Juvenly of Krutitsy and Kolomna assisted by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, and Metropolitan Clement of Kaluga and Borovsk, chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate.
