His Holiness Patriarch Alexy expresses his condolences on the occasion of Boris Yeltsin’s death

first President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin died on 23 April 2007. His Holiness Alexy sent his condolences to the widow, Naina Yeltsina. Below is the full text of the message.

Dear Naina Iosifovna,

With deep sorrow I learned about the death of your husband Boris Nikolaevich Yeltsin, the first President of the Russian Federation.

He was a historic figure, a prominent politician.

In the new Russia which was constructed due to the efforts of the now-gone President, the Russian Orthodox Church received long-awaited freedom to witness and serve without obstacles. A lot of churches and monasteries were returned to the believers, once destroyed sacred places were restored everywhere in their former beauty, a lot of Theological educational establishments were opened, the Russian Orthodox Church could again implement educational, charity and public activities.

Boris Nikolaevich supported good relations between the state authorities and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Having accomplished his mission of head of state in difficult and crucial years, the first President of Russia movingly addressed the nation, leaving the future of the country to its will. I am convinced that the state is in reliable hands now.

I pray for Boris Yeltsin’s soul, may the Lord repose his soul in heavenly abodes and keep him remembered forever.

Yours faithfully,

/+Alexy/

Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia
