His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II meets with Cardinal Roger Etchegaray

On 5 July 2006, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II received the honourary president of the Pontifical Councils ‘Justitia et Pax’ and ‘Cor Unum’ Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who took part in the World Summit of Religious Leaders as a member of the Roman Catholic Church delegation.

His Holiness the Patriarch greeted the guest, noting their longstanding friendly relations.

His Holiness spoke about prospects of the relationship between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches. He said: ‘I would like to emphasize once again that the Orthodox-Catholic cooperation is especially needed today, when the present-day world expects common witness of our Churches about Christian values as well as our response to the challenges of this world.’

Cardinal Roger Etchegaray said that he shared this position and noted the importance of contacts between representatives of different Christian Churches and world religions as well as their dialogue with the secular society and political circles. ‘I know that politicians at the peak of their power are usually very lonely people even if their election was democratic,’ the cardinal said.
