Balkan Icons Exhibition Opens in Iceland’s Capital

A Richness and Diversity exhibition of Balkan icons opened after a High Mass in Hallgrнmskirkja Lutheran cathedral in Reykjavнk, Iceland on 28 May 2006.

The exhibition was organized by Dr Lazar Markovic from Belgrade with some support from the Serbian Orthodox parish of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Reykjavнk and the Russian Orthodox parish of St Nicholas.

The exposition includes over 80 icons from Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Romania and represents the three mainstreams of iconography: traditional, modern and naпve.

During its first day the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russian in Iceland visited the exhibition together with the Rector of the Russian Orthodox parish in Reykjavнk the Revd. Mikhail Zolotusky and some Russian Embassy staff.

The Hallgrнmskirkja cathedral is 74 m high; it was being built during 38 years (1948-1986) on the main hill in Reykjavнk city centre and now is Iceland’s highest building. It is expected that on SS Constantine and Helen Day, 3 June 2006, there will be held an Orthodox Liturgy in which the Hallgrнmskirkja cathedral’s choir, a leading choir nationwide, will participate.
