The website of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, South Africa, has begun functioning on the eve of the Holy Pascha. Its address is www.st-sergius.info.
This new information resource will focus on the life of the Russian-speaking community in South Africa, the past and present of St. Sergius’s as the only Russian Orthodox parish south of Sahara, the history of Orthodoxy in Africa, catechism and religious education for the Russian-speaking diaspora.
In his message of greeting to the visitors of the website, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, says that ‘the opening of a website by St. Sergius’s will contribute to the consolidation of spiritual ties between our compatriots living in South Africa and the Mother Church’, while ‘the existence of its English version will give the native population of South Africa an opportunity for introduction to the treasures of Russian Orthodoxy’.
Among the articles placed on the website is a history of the construction and architecture of the church, chronicle of parish life, the Life of St. Sergius of Radonezh, information about St. Sergius’s Monastery of the Trinity, data concerning Orthodoxy in Africa and a history of Russian presence in South Africa.
