The Orthodox monastery may be restored in the closed nuclear scientists’ city of Sarov. Radiy Ilkaev, director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, stated this on December 13, 2005.
‘We are now discussing this question’, the director said underlining that a reasonable forward movement is needed in the task of reviving the monastery.
He also reported that the Orthodox shrines in Sarov have been restored rather quickly. After the 2003 celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Seraphim of Sarov, the church dedicated to this great Russian saint has been reconstructed and a church has been opened in the hospital quarters. It is planned to consecrate next year the Church of St. John the Baptist, which is part of the monastery compound. The restoration work at the monastery’s cave church is underway.
