The Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church issued a statement to accuse the MPs who had proposed to separate Church and the state in Greece.
Hierarchs believe this proposal to be aimed at weakening the Christian faith, setting up atheistic society and spreading secular totalitarianism.
Hierarchs note that politicians inspired by the ideas of the American Civil Liberties Union want to annul ‘internationally accepted right of parents to upbring their children giving them religious education in state schools’, cancel the institute of chaplains, take down the icons from courts and ‘remove all obstacles for the proselytism of the cults and sects ‘.
‘The Church is saddened that some people are rushing recklessly to demolish people’s faith instead of strengthening it as a vital element for inner fulfillment, national unanimity and social cohesion’, the statement reads.
