First Orthodox church in Kaliningrad celebrates its twentieth anniversary

The first Orthodox church was consecrated in Kaliningrad 20 years ago. During the Soviet time the believers have repeatedly asked to register an Orthodox community and got permission only in 1985.

An Orthodox parish was given the former ‘Juditten Kirche’. The building was ruined almost to the ground, but was restored in an extraordinary short time – in six months. It has become a cathedral church of Kaliningrad, and later – the main church of St.Nicholas Convent. Saint Nicholas is a patron saint of seamen, and it is not fortuitous that the first Orthodox church in the Kaliningrad region was consecrated in his name.
