Copy of the Domical Cross of Novgorod Cathedral of St.Sofia was conveyed to the Spanish Military Engineering Academy

On 12 July 2005, Russian Defense Minister S. Ivanov conveyed the copy of the domical cross of the Novgorod Cathedral of St. Sofia to the Military Engineering Academy near Madrid.

 

Soldiers of the Blue Division took the original cross out of Novgorod in 1942 and Spanish Defense Minister Jose Bono conveyed the cross to the Russian Orthodox Church on 16 November 2004.

 

Novgorod regional administration ordered a copy of the cross to the Novgorod masters.

 

‘Conveying the copy of the domical cross of the Novgorod Cathedral of St. Sofia is a logical continuation of the good will act accomplished by our Spanish colleagues in November last year’, S. Ivanov said at the ceremony. ‘Today Russia made a reciprocal step, which expresses our gratitude to Spanish people’.

 

Among those who participated in the ceremony were Spanish Defense Minister Jose Bono, leadership and cadets of the Madrid Military-Engineering Academy and governor of the Novgorod Region M. Prusak. The Russian Orthodox Church was represented by Archbishop Lev of Novgorod and Staraja Russa and Rev. Andrei Kordochkin, Rector of the Parish of the Nativity of Christ in Madrid.
