THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OPPOSES THE WAR IN IRAQ
On February 4, 2003, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church made a statement on the position of the Greek Orthodox Church in connection with the Iraq crisis.
The statement reads, ‘The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church realizing its pastoral responsibility and duties before God and Christ-named flock watches with concern and grief the situation connected with the threat of war hanging over humanity. This concern is caused by a possibility of the confrontation spreading throughout the Middle East, which will surely bring about negative consequences for our country as well.
The Church of Greece expresses her sympathy and support for all those who go through this test of war notwithstanding their nationality, race, and religion. We also welcome the efforts of all those who struggle for peace against violence wherever it may come from. May the Lord bless their efforts even if they do not meet with response in the hearts of many people ‘.
Earlier Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia and Patriarch Ignatios IV of Antioch and All East during the visit of the latter to Moscow deplored the plans on unleashing war in Iraq and called upon a peaceful solution of the problem. The Georgian Church and the Serbian Church also declared their explicit opposition to the military solution of the Iraq problem.
