IGOR IVANOV MEETS WITH PATRIARCH MAXIM OF BULGARIA

Igor Ivanov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, visited the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church during his official visit to the Republic of Bulgaria on January 30, 2003. He met with Patriarch Maxim of Bulgaria and conveyed him the best wishes from Vladimir Putin.

It was noted that Russia and Bulgaria have common historic roots, common destiny, common hopes and aspirations. Both Russian and Bulgarian nations understand the importance of preserving their own identity and culture, Mr. Ivanov said.

In his turn, Patriarch Maxim said that our countries should become an example of Slavonic unity and suggested that joint efforts should be made to support and develop Russian and Bulgarian cultures.

A.Yakovenko, an official representative of the Foreign Ministry of Russian Federation, said that the sides expressed common opinion that the relations and contacts between Russia and Bulgaria should develop even more actively. According to Mr. Ivanov there are all conditions necessary for it.
