MESSAGE OF GREETINGS FROM HIS HOLINESS ALEXY II, PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA, TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE PARLIAMENTARY HEARINGS ON RELIGION AND HEALTH
(Moscow, 16 January 2003)
Dear compatriots, brothers and sisters,
I wholeheartedly greet all those who have gathered to the parliamentary hearings in St. Daniel’s Monastery.
It is not by accident that the hearings assembled scholars, medical doctors, state officials, public figures and representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and other traditional religions in one hall. We all are concerned over the spiritual and physical health of Russian citizens. It is no use discussing the economical, political and cultural future of our country, if people do not begin to lead a healthy life.
I am confident that the audience would agree that there is a deep connection between spiritual and physical health. Orthodoxy as an integral world outlook provides people with the rules and norms of life tested by the thousand-year experience. Their observance not only saves the soul, but also strengthens the body. Prophet David said: “I may live, for thy law is my delight” (Ps 118:77). Any person can understand and fulfill the God-inspired rules which are appreciated not only by Christians, but also by adherents of other religions and non-believers.
Today, we are challenged to develop practical ways of making society healthier. State institutions, the Church, school, science and culture can and should promote and defend the norms of healthy life.
I wish you a fruitful work. May the Lord grant you success in the fulfilment of your noble tasks as you care for your neighbors’ health and well-being.
+ ALEXY
PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA
